Although
the 1990s were declared the ‘decade
of the brain’ and the last 15
years have led to significant advances
of our understanding of brain function,
the pathology of CNS disorders is still
largely unknown.
In particular for neurodegenerative
disorders which can be genetic or sporadic
in origin, progress towards therapeutic
treatments has not yet led to effective
novel medicines. Thus, the unmet medical
need for treating these diseases is
enormous.
Siena Biotech is a drug discovery company
working on CNS disorder. The current
focus of the company is on neurodegenerative
diseases and neuro-oncology with the
aim of unraveling pathological mechanisms
to enable innovative drug discovery.
For neurodegenerative diseases such
as Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s
it is increasingly becoming evident
that common cellular and molecular mechanisms
underlie these disorders such as context-dependent
cell death, the induction of which would
be desirable in neuro-oncology. |
