Primary brain tumours largely constituted by astrocytomas represent a rare disease condition. An increasing complication is represented by brain metastasis which is developed by 12.5% of patients with widespread systemic cancer types. Although some pharmacological treatments exist, the unmet medical need for effective therapy of brain tumours is enormous.
Neuro-Oncology Research
An exploratory research program aiming at the identification of relevant targets for treatment of glioblastomas has been initiated. Furthermore, the generation of innovative in vitro models which accurately mimic human brain tumours is under development. In a drug discovery project protein tyrosine phosphatases are targeted with the aim of identifying specific inhibitors of these enzymes for effective treatment of brain tumours. |
