IT at Siena Biotech provides 2 pivotal roles.

  • It maintains and administers all informatics infrastructures and in particular the scientific applications and hardware tools need to remain competitive within the changing demands of Biotech drug discovery.
  • The IT unit also focuses on more specific research related activities in order to provide more sophisticated and innovative solutions to help drive, develop, and make accessible informatics related drug discovery tools in house both in a line and matrix (project) setting. As an additional benefit all IT members have thus added to their IT skills a broad knowledge of Chemistry and Biology informatics. The results of this comprehensive interaction between more specific IT knowledge and involvement in scientific research activities are testified in some of the innovative solutions provided by IT to some of the laboratory workflows and portfolio projects.
IT members have gained a wide knowledge of the most important software tools used across the chemistry and biology communities; including the most important tools for cheminformatics and bioinformatics. Such knowledge is reflected in the development of a number of in house software and algorithms able to computerize the replication and distribution of data using multidimensional aggregation and integration algorithms, and served as a base for development of in house software. IT is also directly involved in internal scientific projects aimed at predictive of compound properties and estimation of structure physical properties for use in compound and library design working side by side with the Drug Design Unit and in collaboration with Bioinformatics IT works to optimize algorithms related to sequence alignments and sequence identification, datamining and data retrieval. Obviously, to perform tasks in an efficient and efficacious manner particular attention has been dedicated to designing a high performance computing facility to allow parallel distributed calculations on the Siena Biotech computational cluster and provide a fault tolerance environment.

An high performance multi node computational cluster allows the running of docking algorithms as well as sequence alignment and homology modelling. Furthermore, an Oracle active to active cluster of databases with datafiles stored in a shared clustered file-system is the main platform for the data management. However, other db platforms are also available. The SAN facility is fully redundant and connected in fibre channels with databases and to the computational cluster. Obviously, all aspects regarding informatics security (firewall, backup, antivirus, UPS, fire, etc.) have been implemented allowing to Siena Biotech researchers the maximum reliability and to assure the maximum warrantee.
